NYU Health System's Response to the World Trade Center Disaster of September 11, 2001: Lessons to be learned for future preparedness

United Hospital Fund

The purpose of this study is to distill lessons from the response of the NYU family of hospitals to the WTC disaster that will be helpful in optimizing future preparedness. To achieve this goal, we will (a) review existing administrative assessments of the response, (b) elicit the perspectives of the hospitals' core leadership as to changes that are necessary to improve future preparedness, and (c) conduct a survey of front-line workers to document their perceptions of current readiness and future needs for achieving such preparedness. Findings are intended to inform responses to future disasters with regard to internal hospital functioning, integration with other medical centers in the City, and interface with the public health and disaster response infrastructures.
