NYU Wagner

Specialization: Management of Public and Nonprofit Organizations

Ranked #9 in Nonprofit Management by US News and World Report

The management specialization is offered within NYU Wagner's MPA and MS programs:

The Management specialization prepares students to lead and manage in and across the nonprofit and public sectors. The curriculum design begins with the premise that these two sectors are inextricably linked. To operate effectively in one sector, managers need to appreciate the demands and constraints of the other sector. Topics include management of service operations, the personnel function and human resources management, information systems, marketing and strategic planning.

The Management specialization provides frameworks with which to understand the challenges of managing in a changing environment, and the skills necessary to be effective in management roles. Course work is designed to meet the educational needs of both current managers and students preparing for managerial careers. The needs of these two groups differ somewhat. Therefore, in developing an academic program, students should consult with specialization advisors about their particular needs and objectives. In addition to the specialization requirements, the management faculty highly recommends that students take four credits of "behavioral" courses. These courses are defined by a framework of shared learning goals, including a framework for thinking about individual and group behavior and tools for self-reflection and assessment.

NOTE: Students who plan to specialize in Management should earn a "B" or better in P11.1020, Managing Public Service Organizations. Health students should also earn a "B" or better in P11.1833, Health Services Management. Students without previous management experience are encouraged to obtain relevant experience via internships or part time employment, or the Residency Program in the case of Health students.
