Types of Aid

Research Assistantships

  • Compensation may vary depending on the type of funding.
  • RAs are hired by the Wagner research centers and institutes. Research assistantship opportunities are announced as they become available, typically at the end of summers or start of semesters.
  • Appointments are typically for one year, sometimes renewed.
  • Both incoming and continuing students are eligible.
  • Projects are diverse, and some are administered outside the University. Responsibilities, qualifications, stipends and tuition assistance may vary.

Need-Based Aid

  • Need-based financial aid consists of government subsidized and unsubsidized student loans and grants, such as the Robert T. Stafford Student Loan Program and the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). The NYU Office of Financial Aid coordinates all federal loans for students.
  • To apply for all federal aid, file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). NYU strongly recommends filing online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Outside Scholarship Opportunities

UJA-Federation Scholarships for Graduate Education

  • Application deadlines TBA.
  • The application process is now open for the Wiener Educational Center’s scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year.
  • To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must be studying in the New York area full-time, be United States citizens or permanent residents, and have an interest in working in New York’s Jewish communal sector.
  • Scholarship recipients are required to intern within UJA-Federation of New York's network of agencies, area synagogues or day schools while receiving scholarship funds, and to work in those settings, here in the UJA-Federation of NY catchment area, for a minimum of two years after graduation.* Scholarship recipients also participate in a number of educational seminars throughout the year to grapple with some of the key challenges facing the organized Jewish community.

Government Finance Officers Association

  • Application deadlines TBA
  • Daniel B. Goldberg Scholarship - for full-time graduate students. Award amount $10,000.
  • Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship - for full-time undergraduate or graduate accounting students. Award amount $5,000.
  • Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship - for minority students who are upper division or graduate students of public administration, (governmental) accounting, finance, political science, economics or business administration (with a specific focus on government or nonprofit management). Award amount $5,000.

 

Paul and Daisy Soros Foundation

  • Application deadlines TBA
  • Each year the fellow receives a maintenance grant of $25,000 and a tuition grant of one half of the tuition cost of the US graduate program (up to $20,000 per academic year)
ELIGIBILITY:
  • A new American is an individual who is 1) a resident alien or 2) has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen, or 3) is the child of a US naturalized parent (other parent cannot be U.S. born).
  • The program is open to individuals who retain loyalty and commitment to their country of origin as well as to the United States, but it is intended for individuals who regard the U.S. as their principal residence and focus of national identity.
  • The applicant must have a bachelor's degree or be in the final year of undergraduate study. Those who have a bachelor's degree may already be pursuing graduate study and may receive fellowship support to continue that study. Individuals in the third year or beyond in the same graduate program are not eligible (this includes students who have received a master's degree in a program and are continuing for a doctoral degree).
  • To be eligible you must not be older than 30 years of age as of November 1, 2010.

 

National Forum for Black Public Administrators

  • Application deadlines: March 5, 2012
  • Awarded to students pursuing an education in public administration or a related discipline.
  • The National Forum for Black Public Administrators is the professional membership organization dedicated to the advancement of Black leadership in the public sector.
