Mark Oldman to teach at the WAA Alumni Wine Tasting Party, Wednesday, January 12

Join the WAA, fellow alumni, and Mark Oldman, author of "Oldman's Guide to Outsmarting Wine" to learn the secrets to wine-tasting, catch up with friends and colleagues, and support Wagner. For over 14 years, Mark Oldman has taught his Outsmarting WineT courses to thousands of budding wine enthusiasts in New York City and California. Professor Paul Light quoted on the Confirmation Process of Presidential Nominees in The New York Times

Wagner professor Paul Light was quoted in The New York Times on the confirmation process of presidential nominees. In the article "It Will All Come Out. Some of It Matters." by Sam Roberts, Roberts provides a brief history of failed nominations and refers to Professor Light's work in helping to draft a handbook for presidential nominees. Reminder: NYU Wagner Torch Award Call for Nominations

We invite you to acknowledge fellow alumni who exemplify Robert F. Wagner's dedication to public service by nominating them for the NYU Wagner Torch Award. Nominees should be leaders in their field who have made significant contributions to public service. To make a nomination, submit the Torch Award Nomination Form by January 21, 2005. (The Award will be presented at the Annual NYU Alumni Weekend Luncheon on May 14, 2005.)

Spring Networking Events

Every spring, Wagner's OCS, in partnership with the WAA, hosts alumni and students for specialization-based networking events, bringing together individuals with shared interests and career goals in an informal social environment. The four networking events - Public/Nonprofit (Feb. 10), Health (Feb. 16), International/Global Public Service (Feb. 22), and Urban Planning (Mar. 2) - are a great way to connect and reconnect with alumni colleagues and peers in your industry, to find qualified individuals that may fulfill your employment needs, and to assist students in clarifying their career goals. Each event runs from 7 - 9 pm, at the Puck Building, with hors d'oeuvres and cocktails provided. Please join us - RSVP online.

Partnership for Innovative Practice

Coming in early 2005 the Partnership for Innovative Practice offers two programs focusing on the demands facing health care leaders.

Project Management for Health Care Leaders, New York (February 10-11) - This two-day program helps health care leaders develop the tools to meet the challenges of offering new services, developing new approaches to streamline existing operations, opening new facilities, and introducing new technologies. This course has been approved by NYSNA for 15.2 contact hours. Fee: $595 - Wagner alumni can register at the discounted rate of $525.

Building a High Performance Health Care Work Units, New York (February 23) This one-day program introduces health care leaders to leading edge human resource strategies, such as becoming a magnet organization, utilizing talent management programs, creating a learning organization culture, and establishing individual performance standards that are linked with organizational metrics. This course has been approved by NYSNA for 7.8 contact hours. Fee: $295 - Wagner alumni can register at the discounted rate of $250.

Did You Know...?

 

Peter P. Hoontis (MPA '99) has been appointed to the position of senior vice president and chief operating officer of the YMCA of Greater New York. Prior to this appointment, and since 1998, Hoontis was vice president of operations, and executive director of New York City's largest YMCA Branch, the West Side YMCA, where he managed a budget of $15 million. As Chief Operating Officer of the YMCA of Greater New York, Peter is responsible for the operation of 19 YMCA branches throughout the five boroughs and a 1,000-acre Resident Camp and Conference Center in upstate New York. Congratulations, Peter.

Melissa Lee (MPA '03), Commercial Revitalization Program Manager at the Pratt Area Community Council has joined Newsday's Community Champions committee, a new program developed to recognize nonprofits for their commitment in serving NYC. As a committee member, Melissa is charged with identifying and nominating worthy not-for-profit organizations for consideration. Melissa invites any and all alumni to submit their nonprofits for nomination - please email Melissa directly with your interest. Thanks and congratulations, Melissa.

Sarah Ludwig (MUP '89) Executive Director of the Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project (NEDAP), and colleagues, were recognized by the Ford Foundation's prestigious Leadership for a Changing World program. NEDAP promotes economic justice in New York City communities by serving as a resource center for community groups in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. Congratulations, Sarah.

Jeffery Tuller (MPA '04) was recently hired to be the Special Assistant to the Senior Vice President of Operations for Atlantic Philanthropies. Congratulations, Jeffery.
