Responding to critics of microfinance who have argued that it is merely a Band-Aid on global inequalities, Professor Morduch argues for a more realistic perspective in an interview with The New Yorker magazine. "That is a valid critique, to a point," he said. "But get real. How long are you willing to wait for the revolution? I can't see any moral foundation for not trying to address the current deprivations of the world's poorest billions. Speaking of election night, join NYU Wagner's own Bob Shrum and Rogan Kersh, along with Kieran Mahoney, for the "Election 2006 Review," on Tuesday evening, Nov. 14th, at NYU Wagner. Panelists will summarize the recent 2006 mid-term elections, where both chambers of Congress could potentially switch to Democratic control. The impact of the elections on U.S. domestic and foreign policy is also up for discussion, as is the panelists' perspectives on the 2008 presidential election - the first in over a half-century that does not include an incumbent president or vice-president running. Jo Ivey Boufford, a national authority on healthcare and public health policy, has been elected President of The New York Academy of Medicine. Professor Boufford, former Dean at NYU Wagner, was President of the NYCHHC under Mayor Koch and served under President Clinton as Principal Deputy and Acting Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Wagner Review of Public Affairs is the student-run academic journal of the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University. Natasha L.O. Bannan (MPA '06) is the Manager of Multicultural Initiatives for Girl Scouts of the USA. In this role, Natasha works at the national office and manages the organization's Hispanic Initiative, where she works with local affiliate councils nationwide in developing strategies and resources to partner with the Latino community on girl and women's issues and to engage the community within the organization. Natasha also develops partnerships with national Latino organizations whose mission and work with youth and women mirrors the Girl Scouts.
Javier J. Boullon-Agrelo (MPA '97) is the founder and co-owner of FBA Consulting, a management consulting company focused on improving the quality of health care facilities in Spain. FBA's client list includes over 200 of all the hospitals in Spain.
Judie Gilmore (MPA '05) is a Development Associate at the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, where she raises money through traditional grant writing and donor campaigns, as well as special events, merchandise sales, and other special projects for nonprofit arts organization that has produced over 2,700 murals in Philadelphia.
Patricks Mbala (MUP '05) is the Manager, Central Consultancy Bureau at the University of Nambia, where he is responsible for coordinating both consultancy projects and short training programs. The University Central Consultancy Bureau (UCCB), the official consultancy and short training programs coordinating agent of the University of Namibia, strives to constantly improve knowledge and skills by engaging staff members and students to actively participate in projects that contribute to the betterment of social, political, cultural, economic and environmental milieu of Namibia, SADC region and the African continent in general.
Susan Miller (MPA '03) has joined the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association in Washington, DC as a Senior Consultant. In this role, Susan oversees contract compliance for all of the IT systems used to process enrollment and health insurance claims for federal employees, retirees & their families, which is the largest privately underwritten health insurance contract in the world, covering over 4.3 million people.
