NYU Wagner has established a reputation for attracting and educating outstanding individuals who are helping nonprofit organizations fulfill their missions. Whether seasoned professionals, recent college graduates, or mid-career managers, students arrive at the Wagner School with a desire to serve the sector, and they leave with the cutting edge skills needed to increase the impact of nonprofit organizations.
Wagner students are prepared to manage a wide array of nonprofit programs and services. They can be found working at the local, national, and international levels of human and social service agencies, health organizations, economic development corporations, foundations, consulting firms, cultural institutions, advocacy groups, environmental protection agencies, and other nonprofits.
Wagner's MPA Program in Nonprofit Management is rated seventh in the nation in U.S. News and World Report's rankings of public affairs programs with a nonprofit specialty. Our success is based on rigorous academics that link theory to practice with an overall emphasis on the development of critical thinking and communication skills.
In addition to courses in nonprofit management, financial decision-making, and policy analysis, many students enhance their skills through courses in marketing for nonprofit organizations, nonprofit law, community organizing, board governance, fundraising, human resources management, and conflict management. Wagner students have also successfully completed a one-year "Capstone" project where they work as a member of a consulting team to solve a public service problem for a client in a nonprofit organization. As a result, these leaders are trained to be effective managers with the ability to work with colleagues in the complex organizational settings common in the nonprofit sector.
Recent NYU Wagner graduates can be found playing the following significant roles in the redevelopment of neighborhoods, advocacy for social justice, and the provision of vital human and social services:
In addition, Wagner students participate in internships throughout their schooling. Sample internships take place with the International Rescue Committee, New York Philanthropic Advisory Services, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, SOBRO, Vera Institute of Justice, LISC, The Asia Society, and numerous other agencies.
