This course will explore how core features of the American polity and history have shaped the contours of American immigration politics and policy. It will embed these American practices within a global perspective, which entails analyzing how globalization has brought forth new challenges regarding citizenship, international obligations, boundaries, and economic competitiveness, and how the experiences of other countries can inform American policy.
