Politics of Development

This course provides an introduction to the politics of development, focusing on the social transformations associated with struggles over and policies aimed at the control of rights, resources, and opportunities and the impact of those struggles and policies on income, and well-being. Issues we will cover include debating the meaning of development, state-building and development, the relationship between democracy and development, sustainable management of natural resources, the role of social movements, and innovative approaches to development challenges.
