Matriculation and Leave of Absence

Maintenance of Matriculation

No degree can be awarded to a student who is not matriculated. In order to maintain continuous matriculation, students must either:

  1. Register during the fall and spring semester for at least one credit-bearing course, unless they only have one course left to complete their degree, or pay maintenance of matriculation fees and adequately complete coursework requirements.

  2. OR

  3. Pay the maintenance of matriculation fee for each term in which they are not registered for at least one credit-bearing course.

Doctoral students are reminded that they must maintain matriculation while completing their dissertation research and writing. Continuous matriculation may be met in the following ways: 1) registering for a normal course load or 2) enrolling
in Research in Progress (P11.3901).

Students must complete degree requirements in force at the time of their initial enrollment: five years for master’s degree students and seven to ten years for doctoral students. The time to complete degree requirements includes any semester(s) for which students paid maintenance of matriculation or took a leave of absence (see below). Paying maintenance of matriculation does not constitute satisfactory progress toward a degree. Therefore, students with more than one course remaining must have special approval from the Associate Dean to continue to register for only one course during the Fall or Spring.

Students who fail to fail to complete the degree requirements within the required time limit, or who fail to maintain matriculation must apply for readmission. Applications for readmission will be evaluated on the basis of the standards used to evaluate new applicants for admission. Readmitted students must satisfy all the degree requirements and procedures in effect at the time of readmission.

Leave of Absence

Matriculated students in good standing who wish to withdraw from school for one or more semesters for national service, serious illness, or compelling personal reasons are required to submit a written leave of absence request to their program
administrator. If granted, a leave of absence maintains matriculation and assures readmission at the expiration of one academic year. The academic year begins on September 1st and ends on August 31st. Students granted leaves of absence are still required to complete all degree requirements within the specified time of initial enrollment.

Any student who has not enrolled in courses or maintained matriculation for more than two academic years is required, without exception, to apply for readmission to the Wagner School.

Students who receive Wagner School merit scholarship aid and who take a leave for a semester relinquish the scholarship. They may reapply for scholarship at the time of re-enrollment. Their applications will be considered with the rest of the current student body.
