Sanjiv Rao

Sanjiv Rao started the Wagner PhD program in the fall of 2004. He currently serves as a Program Officer in the Educational Opportunity and Scholarship unit at the Ford Foundation.

Sanjiv came to Wagner after six years as an urban public school teacher and three years as a Senior Associate at the Annenberg Institute for School Reform (AISR) at Brown University. Prior to joining the Ford Foundation in 2012, he served for four years as Executive Director of the New York State Afterschool Network (NYSAN), working on education and youth development policy and funding at the state level.

Sanjiv's broad areas of interest include organizational learning, the conditions required for sustaining organizational and policy change in urban systems, and implementation research. His dissertation is a qualitative study of how community school strategies that provide comprehensive wraparound services influence school-level education practice, which he hopes to complete in early 2013. He holds a B.A. in History from UCLA, an M.A. in Education from UC Berkeley, and an M.Phil. in Public Administration from NYU's Wagner School.
