Michael Gedal


Michael Gedal will receive his Ph.D. from NYU in May 2013. His research interests include housing economics, real estate finance, and housing and land use policy. Michael's dissertation examines the relationship between land market outcomes and urban redevelopment decisions. This research was generously funded by grants from the US Department of Housing and Urban Redevelopment and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. 

Since 2007, Michael has worked as a Doctoral Research Fellow at NYU's Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy, where he has researched various topics in housing finance and land use policy. His current work analyzes the role neighborhood factors play in home mortgage default decisions. Michael has also co-authored papers that assess methods for estimating urban land values, the property value impacts of subsidized housing investments, and trends in the availability and affordability of housing in New York City. 

Michael lectured on microeconomics at the NYU Wagner School from 2008 to 2011, both in the capacity of teaching assistant and instructor. He was awarded the Steven Finkler Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2011.

Michael has a BA in economics from Emory University and an MPA from the Wagner School. Previously, Michael worked at Abt Associates and National Economic Research Associates. Michael has been a SAS programmer since the turn of the century.
