detailed Field Description (pdf)
The purpose of the Research Methods field is to provide students with an
opportunity to develop in-depth competencies and to master research tools
that can be used when undertaking research in public policy, management, finance
and health.
To complete this field, students must choose to take two of the five modules
outlined in the detailed field description. Students must take a total of at least five courses
for this field and must take at least two classes in each module. In contrast
to the other fields (policy, management, finance, health, and all special
fields), students will demonstrate proficiency in each module based upon the
grades earned in the courses and by passing a take-home exam, administered
during the regular comprehensive exam period. In general, students must earn
a “B+” average, with a minimum grade of “B” for doctoral
level courses and a minimum grade of “B+” for masters level courses,
although exceptions may be made in rare circumstances.
A Wagner School faculty member serves as advisor for each module. Students
should meet with a module advisor prior to enrolling in module courses in
order to arrange an appropriate plan of study. All coursework and grades must
be certified by the module advisor in order for proficiency to be granted.
Approval forms are available from doctoral program assistant director. The advisor
for each module is listed within the description. Students should also
be sure to check with all relevant schools and departments regarding registration
deadlines. In certain cases, students may be awarded transfer credit for prior
coursework outside of NYU that is substantially equivalent to the classes
listed in the field description. However, students must complete a minimum of two classes in each
of their chosen modules while registered at NYU. In special cases, module
advisors may also award credit to alternative classes that are not included
on the lists in the field description.
