The heart of NYU Wagner's programs is our faculty. An amalgam of full-time, clinical/research/visiting, and adjunct professors, they are outstanding teachers, expert researchers and committed practitioners.
The dual-degree program consists of 68 credits (twenty courses) in the nursing core, nursing specialty component, management core, health management or health finance or health policy, and an integrative practicum. The degree is broken up into 38 credits at the College of Nursing and 30 credits at NYU Wagner. While a student may concentrate in one of the three program areas—health services management, health finance, or health policy analysis—students are free to select courses and plan a program of study, provided that individual course prerequisites are met. Students should formulate a plan with their advisor to assure a successful program.
Field placement in the integrative practicum, the final course in the dual degree, is based on individualized student interests and provides the opportunity for students to apply knowledge and skills gained in the program at the upper management level in the health care sector.
Students are assigned a faculty advisor in both schools to assist in planning the program of study and to provide guidance on professional and career development. On a full-time basis, students should be able to complete requirements for both the MS Nursing and Executive MPA Programs in five semesters. On a part-time basis, students should complete the requirements in ten semesters. Enrolling in summer sessions shortens the length of the program.
Students begin the program of study in the Division of Nursing, with the six required nursing core courses, followed by two core courses in the Wagner Executive MPA program, four courses in the nursing specialization, five additional management courses in the Wagner School, the nursing elective, and the integrative practicum as an end event.
Students are required to consult with both their Nursing and Wagner advisors during each registration period to assure progress toward the degrees is on track and course selections are consistent with prior course work and career objectives. The following sample programs of study demonstrate several approaches of sequencing courses and the specific areas where courses are required or elected.
