Amit Nigam
Assistant Professor of Management

My research—rooted in organizational and management theory—seeks to understand processes of institutional and organizational change. The aim of my work is to better understand how change unfolds over time.

My research on institutional change develops theory to explain how institutional logics change. I extend prior work, which focuses on political action by individual change agents, to examine collective interpretation and sensemaking as sources of change in institutional logics. Empirically, my research examines the emergence of managed care as a guiding institutional logic in the organizational field of American hospitals, and the emergence of logics of professional accountability in American medicine.

My work on organizational change examines how individuals’ professional roles shapes their perspective on what needs to be changed, how conflict and coordination across professions shape what gets changed, how new professional and organizational roles are created, and the unique practices and resources of outsiders – external facilitators and consultants – in shaping change processes.

I completed an MA in International Relations at Yale University and a Joint Ph.D. in Management & Organizations and Sociology at Northwestern University. After my Ph.D. I completed a post doctoral fellowship at the Collaborative for Health Sector Strategy in the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. My research has been published or is forthcoming in Organization Science, Organization Studies, and Social Science & Medicine.
