Brian Elbel, assistant professor of medicine and health policys with NYU Wagner and the NYU School of Medicine and NYU Wagner, has been awarded a grant from the New York State Health Foundation to evaluate New York City’s new policy limiting the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB’s) to servings of 16 ounces or less at restaurants and other food-service establishments. This is the first large-scale, population-level policy to target SSB consumption in the US, and it is unknown how consumers and suppliers will respond.
NYU Wagner partnered with New York City Public Advocate Bill De Blasio and his office’s nonprofit Fund for Public Advocacy as well as the New York Community Trust to support a rigorous public dialogue about City pensions, retiree health care expenses, and other long-term public obligations and liabilities. Two reports have been published stemming from the discussions.
RCLA Faculty Director Sonia M. Ospina was inducted as a National Academy of Public Administration Fellow in November 2012. New Fellows are elected by the entire membership after a rigorous nomination process that takes place each spring. This year’s Fellows join the ranks of an illustrious group that includes: eight current or former members of the US Congress, 18 current or former presidential cabinet members, eight current or former governors,18 current or former mayors, and 33 current or former chancellors or presidents of colleges and universities, among other esteemed public figures.
In order to modernize this powerful communications infrastructure, the City is hosting Reinvent Payphones, a public design challenge that seeks to rally urban designers, planners, technologists, and policy experts to create physical and/or virtual prototypes that imagine the future of payphone -- and NYU Wagner is a partner.
A diverse group of 33 talented and accomplished recent college graduates have been selected to participate in the prestigious Fellowship for Emerging Leaders in Public Service Class of 2013. Through the seven-month program sponsored by NYU Wagner's Research Center for Leadership in Action, these early career professionals will deepen their understanding of the public service landscape, reflect on and strengthen their leadership abilities, engage in strategic career planning, and develop a cross-sector network of peers and mentors in public service.

Christopher Nolan, a student at NYU Wagner, has been chosen to receive the National Hispanic Health Foundation's 2012 Health Professional Student Scholarship, and will be honored at the Ninth Annual New York Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship Gala Dinner on Nov 29.
University and graduate students and recent college graduates from around the globe can develop the practical knowledge and skills to advance social justice in their communities through RCLA’s summer institute from July 7-19, 2013. Through interactive workshops and site visits throughout New York City, participants learn from leaders at the forefront of policy reform and advocacy, coalition building and direct service. They emerge with an action plan for making meaningful change in their communities and a network of other committed changemakers working in a variety of international contexts.
