Attracting People to Public Service

Institute on Public Service Careers

New York City
March 12 & 13, 2007

This professional development training is for staff of national and community service programs. One in a series of regional trainings offered by Action Without Borders - Idealist.org and New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, this conference aims to broaden and reframe the definition of public service work and make these career paths more visible and accessible to Corps members in a variety of year-of-service programs.

PROGRAM
By the end of this two-day training, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate a new vision of career transition support for Corps members
  • Implement new approaches to career transition trainings for Corps members throughout their term of service
  • Provide resources that enhance the ability of Corps members to develop successful careers in public service
  • Guide Corps members in exploring and developing career paths
  • Illustrate the power of networking and create trainings to develop this skill in Corps members
  • Train Corps members in effective job search methods and communication tools
  • Describe to Corps members how hiring decisions and graduate admissions decisions are made
  • Coach and advise Corps members with an aim to clarifying aspirations

IPSC was launched in December 2004 with a 2-day forum at which higher education career service professionals from across the country met to define the challenges of connecting more young people to public service careers and identify the resources and approaches that address those challenges effectively. We followed this successful event with five regional conferences, and in 2006, this program received the NACE/Chevron Award for innovative programming in career services.

FACILITATORS AND PRESENTERS
The Forum will be facilitated by David Schachter, Assistant Dean for Career Services and Experiential Learning at the Wagner School and by Amy Potthast, Manager of the Nonprofit and Public Service Careers Program at Action Without Borders- Idealist.org.
