Democratic Governance and Sustainable Development in Latin America Series Co-sponsored by NYU Wagner's Research Center for Leadership in Action, the NYU Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, NYU Wagner's Office of International Programs, and the Alliance of Latino and Latin American Students. The pursuit of the public good requires collective action and leadership. The pressing social, economic and political problems facing Latin American countries are complex and exceed the capacity of each of the public, private and social sectors working alone. This series aims to raise awareness and foster discussion about current problems and challenges affecting democratic governance and sustainable development in Latin America. The events will explore the nature of the relationship between the State and civil society and its impact on various developmental outcomes. _ This Week: Immigration, Diaspora, and Politics With Robert C. Smith is an Associate Professor at Baruch College, CUNY School of Public Affairs. He is the author of "Mexican New York: Transnational Worlds of New Immigrants". He has also published many articles and book chapters on immigration and children of immigrants, education, transnational life, and Mexico.
