The National Transit Institute at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in contracting with the Rudin Center for Transportation Policy & Management, has developed a course in senior leadership for transit industry professionals. The course provides transit industry executives the opportunity to enhance their management skills as they relate to industry specific issues. It will facilitate an exchange of knowledge, ideas, and best practices within the industry.
The course features group exercises among the participants that help foster and build relationships between colleagues and the speakers who are distinguished leaders in the transit industry. Instructors are drawn from both the transit industry and academia; all are recognized experts in their respective fields.
The two-and-a-half day program is designed as three sessions:
The Individual Leader. Building participants' awareness of the competencies and skills needed to succeed as leaders in the unique public sector environment where transit agency leaders operate.
The Environment in which Decisions are Made. Presentation of new paradigms or transit industry trends and challenges along with a discussion on working in a public environment.
Institutional Frameworks. Focus on strategic thinking and implementing change successfully. A leadership self-assessment tool will be given to participants in advance. It must be completed as a prerequisite to the course. Senior level management and upper/middle management with senior management potential make up the target group for this course. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate and are awarded 2.6 continuing education credits.

Aimed at facilitating a dialogue among the cities which are part of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) and several of their peers, this workshop was held June 19-20, 2003 in New York City. Nine cities, three states, and several transportation organizations were represented as ideas and solutions were exchanged regarding context sensitive solutions in large central cities.
In June of 2000, the Rudin Center led a delegation of transportation leaders from the public, private, and academic sectors in the New York region that met with the President of the Dominican Republic, leaders of the Dominican Legislature, the Ministers of Public Works and Public Transportation, the media, academic leaders, and other officials to advance this project.
