Women of Color Policy Network

Beyond the Window  Summer Youth Public Policy Institute

Program Description

The Beyond the Window Public Policy Summer Institute is an intensive four-week program on the campus of NYU with rising first-year College students designed to introduce them to the public policy making process through the examination of relevant social issues. Student Scholars learn basic research skills and how to analyze data to support community needs. They will also have the opportunity to interact with scholars, practitioners, and advocates working in various fields.

Students participating in the four-week program offered by the Women of Color Policy Network will be recruited from the pool of LEDA scholars who have completed the eight-week Aspects of Leadership Summer Institute the previous year at Princeton University. Over the course of the four weeks, students will:

  • Work with NYU Wagner Faculty, community practitioners, and New York City Council Members to learn about public service, social problems facing different communities, and identify solutions based on the lived experiences of communities and individuals;
  • Conduct original research on a social policy issue and present findings and policy solutions to members of the New York City Council;
  • Strengthen critical thinking and analytical skills through writing and facilitated group exercises; and
  • Attend guest lectures, seminars, and cultural events on the campus of NYU and in New York City.
