Program Summary


Beyond the Window aims to address the lack of policy information that exists in communities by providing a space whereyoung women of color learn about the policy formation process and the relevance of public policy in our lives. It encourages civic engagement,and provides them with critical thinking, research, oral and written skills. The program has served 47 young women since 2003.

Over the course of the program participants :

  1. design reports and presentations for the Women's Issues Committee of the NYC Council on a self-identified policy concern;
  2. develop an increased interest in the policymaking process and pursue it via advocacy/activism, politics, or higher educational pursuits;
  3. attend citywide hearings, forums and community events, as well as engage in dialogue with community leaders and activists from various organizations and communities of color; and
  4. are linked to various community leaders and organizations working around their self-identified issues.
