The current economic crisis and recent natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina remind us that economic security and well-being is not guaranteed for the most vulnerable in our society, particularly single-women heads of households. Our research in this area focuses on income disparities and workforce development; welfare reform and safety net disintegration; poverty and relative deprivation in urban communities; and the impact of geographic isolation and social access on economic mobility.
Our research in the area of health focuses on disparities and aims to understand the personal and communal influences that influence health outcomes for women of color. Our goal in this area of research is to better understand the impact the intersections of socio-economic status, geographic location, and other barriers to accessing services or entering the health care delivery system to create more effective public policies. Our work has centered on disparities in the rate of infectious diseases among African-American and Latino women, maternal and infant mortality, and reproductive health.
At the Network, we strive to help develop the next generation of policy-advocates. We work closely with the Research Center for Leadership In Action, NYU Wagner, and our community partners to ensure that scholars, students, and practitioners of colors have all of the skills and support necessary to succeed as public servants.
