Urban Planning Careers

Attention: Urban Planning Employers

NYU Wagner has established a reputation for attracting and educating outstanding individuals who are committed to effective urban planning. Whether seasoned professionals, recent college graduates, or mid-career managers, students arrive at the Wagner School with a desire to serve the public, and they leave with the cutting edge skills needed to succeed as city and regional planners.

Committed to public service, Wagner students are prepared to work in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private consulting and development firms. They can be found formulating plans and developing policies on urban issues such as economic development, housing, urban design, environmental protection, and infrastructure that supports transportation, environmental facilities, and telecommunications.

Wagner is rated second in the nation in U.S. News and World Report's rankings of public affairs programs with a city management/urban policy specialty. The success of our MUP program is based on rigorous academics that link theory to practice with an overall emphasis on the development of critical thinking and communication skills.

In addition to courses in urban planning, land use regulation, management, urban economics, policy analysis, and urban physical design, students have also successfully completed a one-year "Capstone" project where they work as a member of a consulting team to solve a public service problem for an urban planning client. As a result, these leaders are trained to undertake effective planning with the ability to work with colleagues in the complex organizational settings common in the urban planning field.

With a thorough understanding of the interconnecting economic, political, social, and technological factors that shape the metropolitan physical environment, recent NYU Wagner graduates can be found in the following significant roles:

In addition, NYU Wagner students participate in internships throughout their schooling. Sample internships take place with NYC Department of City Planning, Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, NYC Economic Development Corporation, SOBRO, NYC Transit Authority, NYC HPD, The Enterprise Foundation, and numerous other agencies.
