Anchor Development: Improving City, Hospital and University Partnerships

In recent years, the concept of universities, hospitals, and medical centers serving as “anchor institutions” in their local communities has begun to take shape. This anchor function goes beyond maximizing their central educational or health service delivery roles and includes activities such as neighborhood revitalization and community development. This project will extend thinking and practice by assessing why such development has not been more widely adopted and how the concept can be broadened to include other facets of university strength including cultural and intellectual impacts on the region and ways in which targeted research can be applied to local policy issues.

NYU Wagner in partnership with the Ford Foundation is exploring these issues and assess what it means to be an anchor for the community, and develop a set of proposals that grantmakers and anchors can pursue to catalyze broad adoption of development strategies to improve the economic and social trajectory of localities throughout the country.
