Requirements to Maintain Visa Status

Federal regulation requires that F-1 and J-1 visa students maintain full-time status each semester.

  • In your first year, you will take 12 credits in the fall and the spring.
  • In your second year, the majority of students enroll in 10.5 credits in the fall, and 10.5 credits in the spring and request Full-Time Equivalency each term

However, if you have taken extra credits in your first year (summer, January courses, etc.), please note that you are required to take at least 7.5 credits in the fall, including Capstone. You will still need to request Full-Time Equivalency. In your final semester, you will enroll in 1.5+ credits and request Full-Time Equivalency or complete the Part-Time Enrollment Form through OGS. Part-time enrollment is allowed in your final semester only.
