Lysa Scully, LaGuardia Airport General Manager, Speaks at the NYU Rudin Center

Lysa Scully event

Lysa Scully, the General Manager of LaGuardia Airport, spoke at the NYU Rudin Center on June 14th as part of the Center's Women Leaders in Transportation series.

Ms. Scully, a 33-year employee of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is leading LaGuardia Airport’s $8 billion redevelopment, one of the largest airport construction projects in the United States. She concurrently oversees the airport’s daily flight operations, including 1,200 flights and a staff of 400. Under her leadership, LaGuardia’s passenger volumes have grown to record levels.

The conversation with Ms. Scully, moderated by Sarah M. Kaufman, NYU Rudin Center's Associate Director, centered on her career. Ms. Scully provided several recommendations for career development, including:

  • Seek out a mentor who encourages and productively challenges you.
  • Develop a team of experts and trusted individuals to ensure optimal decision-making.
  • Don't sit quietly; "the only opinion that is not valued is the one not shared." At the same time, the quietest person in the room may feel uncomfortable to speak; that person should be asked to share their opinion.

Video from the event will be shared in the near future. We look forward to the next event in this series, on November 4th, 2019.
