Global Social Change Leadership Institute

Overview

The Global Social Change Leadership Institute was an intensive two-week long leadership development program offered at NYU Wagner in the summers of 2012 and 2013. This program provided an opportunity for students and emerging leaders from the United States and around the world to strengthen their leadership ability and skills, learn about cutting-edge research on leadership and social change, and see firsthand what makes organizations successful in advancing social justice. By the end of the program, participants developed a plan for action in their own schools or communities and a strong network of other advocates.

The Program

The Social Change Leadership Institute integrated rigorous research with real-world experience to offer participants a robust understanding of social change leadership, its practical contexts, and the opportunities and challenges that leaders face in their work. A rich curriculum helped participants to assess their own leadership potential while learning to mobilize others and develop breakthrough solutions to social issues. Activities included:

  • Interactive workshops that offered opportunities for reflection, peer learning, team building, and planning based on personal objectives and projects.
  • Presentations by institute faculty with established expertise in nonprofit management, community organizing, team building, communications, and strategic program evaluation.
  • Site visits to nonprofit organizations, cultural sites, and historic landmarks across New York City.
