Activism & Women’s Incarceration
While the dominant narrative around mass incarceration in the U.S. centers around men, women account for the fastest-growing segment of prisoners in the United States, with their rates of incarceration growing twice as fast as men's.
Join Students for Criminal Justice Reform on November 17, 2021, from 7-8 pm EST to hear from a panel of inspiring women (listed below) sharing their experiences with the criminal legal system and advocating for change. The event will center the voices of individuals whose lives have been directly affected by the prison system, with a focus on activism and organizing around women, families, and community life, and highlight challenges that are unique to women who have navigated the barriers and stigma of incarceration. It will take place on Zoom and be moderated by Shabnam Javdani, an Associate Professor of Applied Psychology and Associate Director for the Prison Education Program at NYU.
- Anisah Sabur, New York City-based activist with HALT Solitary
- Betty McKay, Organizing Fellow at Essie Justice Group
- Tracey Carter, Parent Advocate, Family Defense Practice at the Bronx Defenders
Action items and ways to get involved will be shared at the end of the session!
