Jane Jacobs’s book The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1960) initiated a revolution through the architecture and planning disciplines, but more importantly, it changed the common understanding of what cities are and what they should be. Jane Jacobs’ conception of cities led her to activism, and her most famous victory was won against Robert Moses’ attempt to build a highway in New York City’s West Village. Citizen Jane: Battle for The City documentary tells the story of those confronting different views of urbanization, while also analyzing Jacobs’ concepts in today’s cities.

This documentary will be screened for students, with a roundtable discussion to follow among guest speakers and students, on the relevance of Jacobs’ ideas today for cities all around the world.
