In 1912, art critic and poet Guillaume Apollinaire saw Robert Delaunay’s colorful, abstract paintings and connected the works to the multidisciplinary Ancient Greek singer and poet Orpheus, around whom developed a Mystery Cult called Orphism. The Orphists believed the poet Orpheus used music to reach the underworld, giving music a supernatural power that could enhance other art forms.
Featuring over 90 artworks in the museum’s iconic rotunda, this major exhibition examines the vibrant abstract art of Orphism. It explores the transnational movement’s developments in Paris, addressing the impact dance, music, and poetry had on the art, among other themes.
This event is for NYU students only. Attendees must register with an NYU address.
