The Gallery Space at Wagner, in partnership with the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation and the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies, is pleased to celebrate its fifteenth season with the opening of Inescapable Truths: Work in Progress, our Spring 2020 exhibition. The exhibit will feature selections from Bradley McCallum’s nationally acclaimed series of mixed media paintings based on previously unpublished source materials from the late James Foley. With the support of the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, the artist gained unprecedented access to photographs, video footage, and journal entries from Mr. Foley’s photojournalistic archives. This extensive research served as the foundation for McCallum’s enigmatic and powerful artwork. The paintings displayed at NYU represent a limited preview from a larger, on-going project conceived by the artist as a counter narrative to the violence and impunity associated in the mass media with Mr. Foley’s heroic and untimely death.

In keeping with McCallum’s practice, the exhibit is a catalyst for public dialogue. The panel discussion Inescapable Truths: The James Foley Legacy & the Challenges of War Zone Reporting in the Middle East will gather experts in the fields of fine arts, journalism, and philanthropy. They will explore such issues as freedom of the press, the pitfalls faced by the current generation of war-zone photojournalists, and the activist/journalist dynamic that defined James Foley’s career. Moderated by James Tager, Deputy Director of Free Expression Research & Policy at PEN America, confirmed speakers include:

  • Bradley McCallum, Featured Artist;
  • Nicholas Mirzoeff, Professor of Media, Culture & Communication, NYU Steinhardt;
  • Amanda Rogers, Photojournalist and Visiting Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern & Islamic Studies, Colgate University; and
  • Jere Van Dyk, Journalist and Board of Directors Member, the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation.

Registered guests are welcome to presubmit questions for the panelists at wagner.gallery@nyu.edu. Selected questions will be read during the Q&A portion of the event.

Inescapable Truths is cosponsored by Global & Joint Program Studies (GloJo) at NYU’s Arthur L.
