This year is an important one for defending and deepening voting rights and democracy. The dramatic increase in electoral turnout in the 2020 elections has created new opportunities for establishing more robust defense for voting rights at the federal level. At the same time, renewed attacks on voting rights and access are advancing at the state level, especially in Georgia, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Arizona. In other states there are efforts to institutionalize the gains of the last year and to expand democracy, by ending felony disenfranchisement and allowing for no excuse absentee voting. These issues are front and center in local elections and statewide races this year in New Jersey and Virginia and in the New York City elections. New York City is running its first elections where ranked choice voting will be used in special elections and primary elections for most city-wide offices. This is an exciting time to be involved in election campaigns, non-partisan Get Out the Vote Efforts, and nonpartisan efforts to defend and deepen voting rights and democracy. Come to hear about Fellowship and volunteer opportunities that will allow you to do just that!

The session will cover

  • ways in which continuing Wagner students (sorry, these are for Wagner students only) can apply for the Ellen Schall Experience Fund Fellowship to support internships on campaigns or with non-profit election-related groups (and some suggested groups)
  • ways in which continuing and graduating Wagner students (again, Wagner only) can apply for the Brooke Democracy Fellowships to work with the Brennan Center for Justice, the country's leading voting rights center.
  • Information on possible Democracy Fellowships (these fellowships would be open to all NYU students including May 2021 graduates)
  • a range of other ways to contribute to defending voting rights ways and advancing democracy.
