Throughout New York City's history, immigrants with limited economic opportunities have found themselves immersed in the precarious world of outdoor vending. Join Wagner Food Policy Alliance (WFPA) and Dr. Jennifer Berg for a stroll through the Lower East Side as we unpack xenophobia, economic insecurity, racial discord and financial livelihoods of street vendors and today's newest immigrants.  We will stop at various locations throughout LES (Cooper Union, the Bowery Shelters, Chinatown, New Essex Street Market, etc.) to dive into depth about certain challenges faced during the late 19th/early 20th century and pick up some food samples. We will end the tour with a talk about the Street Vendor Project, challenges around regulations, permits, restaurant/vendor divide, etc.

NYU Wagner provides reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities. Requests for accommodations for events and services should be submitted at least two weeks before the date of the accommodation need. Please email sjt329@nyu.edu or call 212.998.7400 for assistance.
