Spring 2024 Conflict Series - Shifting Sands: The Anatomy of Geopolitical Conflicts in the Horn of Africa
Each Tuesday, the Conflict, Security, and Development Series will examine new research, discuss creative policy approaches, and highlight recent innovations in responding to the challenges of security and development in conflict and post-conflict situations.
This week, we will hear from Professor Mehari Maru on the international relations dynamics in the Tigray conflict in Ethiopia.
Professor Mehari Taddele Maru is currently the Academic Coordinator of the Young African Leaders Programme (YALP), Part-time Professor of the School of Transnational Governance, and Part-time Professor at the Migration Policy Centre, European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and Adjunct Professor at John Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, Bologna, Italy.
With more than 22 years of management and professional working experience in multilateral bodies, think tanks and universities, he combines research excellence with a deep knowledge of multilateral systems. Until recently, Dr Mehari was a member of the Technical Committee of the Tana High-Level Security Forum (modelled on, and uniquely related to the Munich Security Forum for Africa), and he worked as Programme Coordinator for the AU Migration Programme and Legal Expert at the African Union Commission (AUC). Dr Mehari also served as Chief Strategist, Legal Drafter, and Lead Migration Expert in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). He served as Programme Head for Conflict Prevention and Risk Analysis at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and as Director for University Reform at Addis Ababa University.
