Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, housed within the Center on International Cooperation (CIC), serves as an impact hub that convenes governments, civil society, and global organizations to advance people-centered justice and close the global justice gap. This work is critical given that 5.1 billion people—two-thirds of the world’s population—lack access to justice.
The NYU Capstone team was tasked with examining how artificial intelligence is shaping access to justice across different national contexts. The project focuses on three case studies- Brazil, Kenya, and the United Kingdom- and develops an analytical framework to assess emerging governance patterns and trends. This research draws on a literature review, over 25 interviews with diverse stakeholders, and field-based insights from the United Kingdom. Findings suggest that while AI is increasingly used to improve administrative efficiency and access pathways, its integration raises important questions around governance, accountability, and equitable access. The project identifies cross-cutting trends and institutional patterns in how AI is being adopted and governed within justice systems.
