NYU Wagner's Anthony Bertelli delivers Jacob K. Javits Visiting Professorship Lecture
Anthony M. Bertelli, NYU Wagner's Professor of the Politics of Public Policy and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Research, delivered the Jacob K. Javits Visiting Professorship Lecture on May 4 entitled "Who Are The Policy Workers & What Are They Doing: A Citizen's Perspective on Democratic Accountability in Modern Governance." Professor Bertelli's talk was co-sponsored by Wagner, the NYU Office of the Provost, and the Marian B. and Jacob K. Javits Foundation. It focused on the citizen's perspective, and avenues of recourse, when things go wrong in an era of complex, multi-dimensional public bureaucracies, government agencies, and politics.
Bertelli's research at NYU Wagner explores issues of governance, centering on the role of poiltical institutions in shaping public policy outcomes and organizational structure. He is the author of several books, among them Madison's Managers with Laurence E. Lynn Jr (Johns Hopkins University Press); The Political Economy of Public Sector Governance (Cambridge University Press); and Public Policy Investment with Peter John (Oxford University Press).
His work has appeared in a wide variety of scholary journals. He serves on the editorial boards of three leading journals, and he is Senior Executive Editor of the Journal of Public Policy, which is housed at Wagner.
The Jacob K. Javits Visiting Professorship at NYU, currently held by Bertelli, was established in 2008 with generous support from The Marian B. and Jacob K. Javits Foundation and its President and Chief Executive Office, Marian B. Javits, the wife of the late U.S. Senator from New York (1957-1981) Ms Javits attended the lecture with familiy members and friends. The large, rapt audience at Lipton Hall included scholars, practitioners and students of public policy, including many Wagner faculty and alumni, with many engaging with the evening's lively Q&A session, followed by a reception.
