On February 4, 2025, NYU Wagner’s Office of Career Services hosted Jeremy Schifeling for a student-focused informational session on using AI and ChatGPT in the job search process. Schifeling is a former hiring manager at LinkedIn and Khan Academy and the author of the No. 1 bestselling book Career Coach GPT: The Complete Guide to ChatGPT Resume, Cover Letter, Interview, and Job Search Success

In the presentation, Schifeling walked students through the process of using ChatGPT applications for all stages of a prospective job search, including employer/role research, resume refining, networking strategies, and interview preparation. Schifeling provided examples of questions job-seekers can ask ChatGPT, including: What are 10 specific job titles that match my skills and interests? What are 10 things I have in common with this alumni? What are the 10 most likely interview questions for this role?

Students took short quizzes about the job search process and used ChatGPT in real time as they followed along with Schifeling's question prompts. Student volunteers were given the chance to share their interests and career goals and Jeremy guided the group through asking informative questions to ChatGPT and using the response algorithm to tailor their resume and LinkedIn profile to support a successful job search and connect with alumni. At the heart of the conversation was the importance of job searching with intention and using AI as a support tool to articulate one’s passions and skills into a job candidate profile that reinforces their values. Schifeling also raffled copies of his book and offered one-on-one personalized LinkedIn review sessions.

In addition to exploring ChatGPT and LinkedIn tools, Schifeling also shared additional resources, including the free Apollo tool that allows users to find a contact email on a LinkedIn or company profile, the CareerBot 3000 that uses AI to identity and rank prospective roles for job seekers, and the Snappr Photo Analyzer that assesses physical and feature characteristics of professional LinkedIn profile pictures. With all of these online tools, Schifeling emphasized the importance of recognizing that the AI platforms are simply supporting systems for a job search.

“There still needs to be authenticity and human narrative in the process, " said Schifeling when describing the areas where using ChatGPT is not recommended. The message a prospective candidate sends should help them stand out in a “sea of AI clones,”—their personal experiences and ambitions should be reflected well. As Schifeling stated in his closing remarks, “It is not just about your job, but what you want your life to be like.”
