A Message from Dean Sherry Glied

Dear NYU Wagner Community,

The unrelenting chain of episodes of police violence against people of color—the names George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery add to an unconscionably long list—and the tragic and disparate impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, especially here in New York, have raised, yet again, the systemic injustices entrenched in our society and the failures of our institutions to address them. I am appalled and depressed to see it. My heart goes out to those in our community who have suffered heartbreaking personal losses and heightened fears because of these events.

I still believe in public service. I still believe in the ability of individuals and institutions to improve the lives of the most vulnerable among us—even on days like today, when that belief is tested. Our mission at NYU Wagner is to prepare public service leaders to make a lasting impact on the public good. May these difficult times lead us not to retreat but to redouble those efforts. Finally, I’d like to reiterate President Hamilton’s message to the NYU community last night. NYU stands with you and has resources to help: for students at the Wellness Exchange, for employees through Carebridge, and the Office of Global Inclusion (OGI) continues to plan events for the community.

Sincerely,

Sherry Glied
