Jennifer Jones Austin and James Stratford

City & State’s 2025 Black Trailblazers list recognizes influential Black leaders who are shaping New York’s political, social, and economic landscape. This year’s honorees include two NYU Wagner alumni whose work in public service and advocacy continues to drive meaningful change.

Jennifer Jones Austin (MS 1997), CEO and executive director, FPWA
Jennifer Jones Austin has dedicated her career to advancing social and economic equity across New York. As the CEO and executive director of FPWA, she plays a crucial role in advocating for policies that support underserved communities. She also co-chairs the National True Cost of Living Coalition, where she is leading efforts to develop a national economic security strategy and policy agenda. In recognition of her impactful leadership, Governor Kathy Hochul recently appointed her as a commissioner on the state Community Commission on Reparations Remedies.

James Stratford (EMPA 2021), executive director, NYC Young Men’s Initiative
James Stratford is at the forefront of youth empowerment in New York City. In December 2024, Mayor Eric Adams appointed him as Executive Director of the Young Men’s Initiative (YMI), a $30 million program under the Mayor’s Office of Equity and Racial Justice. YMI, launched in 2011, focuses on creating opportunities for young Black and Latino men aged 16 to 24. Prior to this role, Stratford held leadership positions at FAN4Kids, A Second Chance Inc., and Phipps Neighborhoods. He was also recognized as a 2024 Coro Leadership New York fellow. A Bronx native, Stratford remains committed to advancing racial and economic justice for young men of color in the city.
