Following a landmark mayoral election in New York City, another crucial vote is approaching—New York City Council Speaker, a role which will be determined by a Council vote in January. On Tuesday, November 18, NYU Wagner and Common Cause New York hosted a roundtable discussion for the five candidates for Speaker in Wagner’s Main Event Space.

Following opening remarks from NYU Wagner Dean Polly Trottenberg, moderators Susan Lerner, executive director at Common Cause New York, and Gabriel Schnake Mahl, deputy chief of staff to the president at NYU facilitated a conversation among the candidates:

  • Crystal Hudson, District 35
  • Christopher Marte, District 1
  • Julie Menin, District 5
  • Amanda Farias, District 18
  • Selvena N. Brooks-Power, District 31

The conversation allowed candidates to share their stances on critical issues facing New Yorkers and discuss their goals for working with Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani in this pivotal moment for the City. Community members in attendance were also given the opportunity to pose specific questions to candidates on topics that matter most to them and their communities.
