Student Spotlight: Jiayi Liu (MPA-PNP 2025)
Jiayi Liu (MPA-PNP 2025), co-chair, Pan Asian Student Alliance
Can you share a bit about yourself and tell us why you chose to attend a school of public service?
I have always been fascinated by the way public systems shape our daily lives. Before Wagner, I was interested in areas like youth education and environmental protection. Volunteering in these areas made me realize that good intentions and individual efforts alone are not enough. Beyond that, we need supportive systems, effective policies, and collaborative action. Ultimately, I chose to attend Wagner, where I can gain a deeper understanding of how public decisions are made and how I can contribute to making those decisions more inclusive and sustainable.
Reflecting on your experience so far, are there any specific lessons or skills that you will take with you after leaving Wagner?
One of the most important concepts I learned at Wagner is systems thinking, which prompted me to view the changing world as a web of complex and interconnected dynamics, rather than a set of isolated issues. For example, conducting stakeholder analysis is a useful way to understand both the rationale behind a policy and its real-world impact. I also benefited from taking courses outside Wagner, developing an interdisciplinary perspective through cultural and business lenses. I hope to stay curious and open to new ideas as I move forward.
What inspired you to get involved with Pan Asian Student Alliance (PASA)? How has being a co-chair contributed to your Wagner experience?
I came across PASA at one of its boba networking events, where I met the former chairs and other community members. I was drawn to the warm and welcoming atmosphere that PASA fosters, so I decided to join and carry forward its spirit. Being a co-chair has greatly enriched my life my life at Wagner. I’ve enjoyed working as a team to put together events and connecting with students, faculty, and alumni. PASA has deepened my ties to the Wagner community and enabled me to grow both personally and professionally.
Which PASA event has been your favorite so far? Which event do you hope PASA continues to host in the future?
Celebrating the Spring Festival has been my favorite event. As an international student who can’t reunite with my family in China during that time, I really appreciate the opportunity to celebrate it at Wagner. It makes me feel at home, and I’m proud to engage the broader community in experiencing my culture. I would also love to see PASA continue the walking tour series in the future. So far, we’ve been to neighborhoods like Chinatown, Flushing, and Jackson Heights and enjoyed a variety of local foods. New York is such a diverse city that it is definitely worth continuing to explore!
