MALI: Tuareg Autonomy, the Rise of Jihadism, and Foreign Intervention
Presented by the International Public Service Association (IPSA) and Professor John Gershman

Mali has recently captured the international community's attention as the next potential "Afrighanistan". But some scholars say Mali's cultural and political realities are distinct and comparisons to South Asian/Arab jihadism are misleading. Our conversation will examine the current crisis through the lens of Mali's racial/colonial history. We will discuss the rising influence of AQIM (Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb), French interventionist efforts and the role of the international community in Mali and the Sahel.
