IGNITE Fellowship Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who should apply to the program?

IGNITE is open to mid-career women of color working full-time for 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations across the the US. Please review the Application Guidelines for years of work experience and expected level of organizational responsibility.

Q. Who should not apply?

The aforementioned requirements were established to help ensure that participants gain maximum benefit from the program and from the fellowship cohort. Thus, interested applicants who do not currently meet the aforementioned criteria are ineligible to apply.

Q. What makes for a competitive application?

Prospective fellows will be evaluated on the overall quality and clarity of their application materials, as well as their demonstrated commitment to affecting social change through ongoing professional work in the social sector.

Q. What is the fellowship Institute? Where and when does it take place?

The nine-month IGNITE fellowship begins with a five-day leadership institute designed to expose fellows to the work of leading-edge social sector organizations, foster connectivity among the fellowship cohort, offer a restorative space for fellows to build leadership capacity, and set the stage for future learning sessions over the course of the fellowship.

The Institute runs from Thursday, August 1 through Tuesday, August 6, 2013, with a kick-off convening in New York City followed by a four-day intensive program at the newly renovated Hyatt Regency Greenwich in Old Greenwich, CT.

Q. May I have visitors or guests at the Institute? What is the policy on children and other family members?

The IGNITE Institute is a unique opportunity for fellows to engage in individual and group reflection while building supportive relationships with cohort members. Therefore, family members, friends and other guests are not permitted to join participants during this week. Exceptions will be made for mothers of children under 18 months old. Applicants who will require this exception must indicate this in the appropriate application field.

Q. I cannot attend the Institute in August. Can I still apply for the program?

Unfortunately, no. The Institute is a critical, mandatory component of the fellowship. If you cannot attend this year, we encourage you to apply to the program next year.

Q. What is the cost of the fellowship and what expenses are included?

There is a $500 program fee to participate in the fellowship.

This fee helps to cover Institute expenses including food, accommodations, and faculty honoraria as well as all curricular materials over the course of the nine-month program.

The fee does not include travel to or from any fellowship activities, including the Institute. Participants are responsible for all airfare and other transportation to and from New York City.

Payment information will be included as part of the acceptance packet for those selected for the program. The program fee must be received in full by July 15, 2013 for Fellows to participate. All Fellows are encouraged to seek financial support from their employer or an outside sponsor to cover all or part of the fee.

Q. If I still have a question about the program after reviewing the Web site, how should I contact the fellowship?
