Fellows Uniquely Equipped to Pursue Public Service Careers
Twenty-eight emerging leaders committed in public service in New York City are equipped with a vision for the change they want to create and a career plan to make it happen. On June 16, they graduated from the Fellowship for Emerging Leaders in Public Service with a map of the field, a career plan to pursue, and a network of other talented professionals for support.

RCLA Faculty Director to Participate in a US Army Research Institute Workshop on Leadership
Sonia Ospina has been invited by the Army Research Institute to participate with eight other notable academics in a workshop on collective leadership. The goal of the workshop, part of a study for the Center for Army Leadership, is to provide a model and definition of collective leadership, as well as some promising avenues for measurement approaches. The event takes place July 7-9, and other participants include Robert Lord, Craig Pearce, Ed Salas, Anson Seers, Paul Tesluk, Mary Uhl-Bien, and Jonathan Ziegert.

Leaders of Color Share Insights for Sustaining Movement-Building Organizations
A new RCLA report, Taking Back the Work: A Cooperative Inquiry into Leaders of Color in Movement-Building Organizations, reflects the work of a group of leaders of color committed to social justice who asked: How do we build, strengthen and sustain movement-building organizations led by people of color? Together they generated four strategies for community-based leaders of color to maintain the integrity of their work and remain accountable to communities, develop supportive relationships, deepen their understanding of race and educate others, and nurture new leaders.

Learning Circle Introduces Useful Evaluation Tool for Leadership Programs
A key challenge for leadership development programs is determining how they have changed the lives of participants and influenced the communities they serve. EvaluLEAD, an evaluation tool developed by the Public Health Institute with support from the WK Kellogg Foundation and USAID, enables program evaluators to capture a spectrum of results at the individual, organizational and community levels. The tool was the focus of an event RCLA and the Leadership Learning Community hosted to share a framework for documenting results and stories that convey the rich experiences and transformations fostered by leadership programs.

Women of Color Policy Network Joins Campaign for New Federal Poverty Measure
The Women of Color Policy Network has joined US Congressional offices in a new campaign for legislation to update the federal poverty measure. The current measure has not been updated since the 1960s and does not take into consideration differences in geographic location, safety net supports, or income assistance, making it more difficult to systematically address poverty in meaningful ways.

Save the date! RCLA's Social Change Leadership Network will host a series of learning sessons on "Using Social Networking Technologies to Enhance Social Justic Impact." At the first session, participants will learn about a variety of social networking technologies and how groups around the world are using them in innovative ways. At the second and third sessions, participants will get hands-on experience with learning, testing and customizing various technologies to determine what works best in their social justice contexts, August 10, 12 and 14, 2009. » Email us for information

RCLA faculty member Erica Gabrielle Foldy will present with Tamara R. Buckley on “Diversity Perspectives: A Comparison of Espoused Theories vs. Theories-in-use” at the Academy of Management’s annual conference in Chicago, August 10-11, 2009.

RCLA Research Associate Jennifer Dodge presented "A Reflection on Comparative Interpretive Case Studies: Examining Civil Society Organizations in Deliberative Democracy" at the fourth annual International Conference in Interpretive Policy Analysis in Kassel, Germany, June 26, 2009.

RCLA congratulates our student staff members who graduated from NYU this year, many of whom received awards and recognition for outstanding service. NYU Wagner graduates include Nikki Georges-Clapp, Jessica Gunderson, Beatriz Maass, and Sindri McDonald; and Frances Polifione graduated from NYU's College of Arts and Sciences.
