Karin Sommer is the Executive Director of the Division of Transportation Planning and Management at NYC DOT, where she helps oversee the design of city streets, including the development of bicycle, pedestrian, and public space programs, the City’s Vision Zero safety program, and other priority initiatives. The Division of Transportation Planning and Management is also responsible for transit development, environmental reviews, street infrastructure that regulates traffic flow, loading and commercial deliveries, and the installation and maintenance of 1 million signs and 225 million linear feet of pavement markings.
Karin has been at NYC DOT since 2010. She previously served as Senior Policy Advisor, where she advised the Commissioner, agency leadership, and City Hall on a range of policy issues including federal policy, interagency coordination, and provided guidance on high-profile agency projects. Prior to NYC DOT, Karin worked at the Metropolitan Planning Council in Chicago, and she has held positions at the Hudson Yards Development Corporation and the Earth Institute. She holds a B.A. from Carleton College and a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from Columbia University.
