Mark Young’s public service career spans more than three decades, spending most of that time in the New York City area concentrating on financial management, budgeting and policy analysis. After a stint as a print journalist, Mark began his government career at the New York City Council’s Finance Division, where he focused on human services and public safety issues. From there he moved to Nassau County, where he first served as the Finance Director for the Nassau County Legislative Majority and then as Budget Director for former County Executive Thomas Suozzi. After nine years in Nassau, Mark joined the MTA Long Island Rail Road as Vice President of Management & Finance / Chief Financial Officer, where he led the budget, accounting, internal controls, performance measurement, information technology, fare policy and market development teams. After 13 years at the LIRR, he moved to MTA Headquarters as Deputy Chief – Management and Budget and headed the Authority’s budget team.
Mark holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Williams College and a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. A native New Yorker who grew up in Queens, he currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two children. He is the president of the South Midwood Residents’ Association and a member of the PS 315K School Leadership Team. He is a volunteer project leader for Wilderness Volunteers, a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining and preserving the nation’s open spaces.
