The Jewish Home and Hospital (JHH) is non-profit nursing home that provides care primarily to senior citizens in need of long-term skilled nursing care. JHH also provides short-term and long-term physical rehabilitative therapy and has a "step down" unit for patients who are ready for discharge from acute care facilities but need more time to recuperate before returning to their homes. As New York City's elderly population continues to grow in size, the JHH realizes that there will be a proportionate increase in the need for support services for caregivers (those providing care to the elderly, at home, on a personal and non-professional basis). JHH requested that a Capstone team conduct an analysis of the services that would be both needed and valued by the caregiver market. The Capstone team conducted both primary research (phone and in-person interviews) and secondary research (examining available literature) to identify the needs of caregivers. In addition the Capstone team identified potential funding sources available to support the provision of such services. The Capstone team’s final report recommends a plan for providing the identified services in a cost-effective manner.
