The Maternal, Infant and Reproductive Health Program, (MIRHP) formerly known as the Bureau of Maternity Services and Family Planning, has a distinguished history of leadership in reproductive health. The Program was formed in 1967 to promote the reproductive health of New York City’s residents through the provision of direct services, community education, service coordination and community partnerships. In 1997, MIRHP implemented a comprehensive nurse directed prenatal case management program as part of their goal to reduce infant mortality, reduce disparities in perinatal health, to reduce unplanned pregnancies and improve access to maternal care. MIRHP requested the assistance of the Capstone team in assessing their nurse directed prenatal case management program. The assessment included review of MIRHP’s service delivery, staff roles, referral system, demographics of the target population and home visits. An extensive qualitative literary review, site visits and interviews with stakeholders were also conducted to accomplish the assessment.
