In December 2004, an earthquake shook Southeast Asia creating a tsunami that devastated the region. In Indonesia, an estimated 150,000 people were dead or missing and just over a half-million people were displaced by the disaster. Prior to the tsunami, a conflict was under way in the Indonesian province of Aceh. Since 1976, approximately 15,000 people have died as a result of the fighting between the Free Aceh Movement and the government. As of August 2005, a peace accord was signed by both parties. There has been overwhelming support for tsunami survivors leaving conflict affected areas underserved. In response, UMCOR-NGO sought the assistance of a Capstone team to conduct a needs assessment. The goal of this assessment was to determine priorities for service expansion in the area. The study focused on the subdistrict of Ganda Pura with a concentration on housing, income generation, health, and infrastructure services.
