Mozambique has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Many women either die in childbirth or are scarred by the trauma of unsafe deliveries. This calamity, combined with the increasing burden of HIV/AIDS, malaria and anemia puts women at great risk. The United Methodist Church, in conjunction with the Government of Mozambique, manages a Hospital in rural Mozambique called Chicuque Rural Hospital (CRH). CRH is a 190-bed hospital, which serves a population of 485,000 in Inhambane Province, Mozambique. The Capstone team was asked by the United Methodist Committee on Relief to research and develop feasible interventions to assist Chicuque Rural Hospital to combat maternal deaths in the four districts of Inhambane Province. The Capstone team presented a set of recommendations that will assist in combating maternal mortality in rural Mozambique.
