Is work experience required for admission?

Work experience is not required for the Master of Public Administration (MPA) or Master of Urban Planning (MUP) programs, though we strongly prefer applicants with at least two years of relevant professional experience. This experience can include full-time or part-time roles, internships, or volunteer work. Students without two years of degree-relevant experience must complete the Professional Experience Requirement (PER).

The MS in Public Policy (MSPP) program is designed for early-career professionals with 2–5 years of experience or recent graduates with significant internship experience. All MSPP students complete a required internship during the spring semester through a course called The Practice of Work.

The Executive MPA (EMPA) program requires at least seven years of professional experience, including demonstrated growth in management and leadership roles.
